The Story Plant, Hard Cover
Two supernatural powers exert their forces on humanity. One is a group of angelic beings that has emerged from our noblest traits (love, compassion, creativity). These angels attempt to help us strive to be everything we can be. The other is a group of demonic beings who emerged at the same time from the perversion of these noble traits. These demons seek to destroy the best of what makes us human. But the greatest threat lies in their drive to seek dominion over humanity. They can do this in only one way – through the desecration of a human or a group of humans who represent an especially pure form of one of the noble traits. If a demon can convert one of these pure humans, he will gain power over humankind and over all of the other demons and angels.
Bruce and Gloria are deeply in love. Since they’ve found each other, the universe has opened up for them. Each had always been ambitious, compassionate, and driven to make a major contribution to the world. However, together, it is as though everything has ratcheted up to a new level. That’s because it has. True romance between extraordinarily virtuous people is a rare thing and when it happens, the world can grow in remarkable ways. Unfortunately, the very thing that offers this chance at wonders poses a critical risk to all of mankind. Because Bruce and Gloria’s romance has drawn the attention of Enervata, an ages-old demon whose primary agenda is to destroy love, and whose supreme mission is to pervert the unusually powerful love shared by Bruce and Gloria. If he succeeds, all of humanity will be his plaything. Enervata, under the human guise of Aaron Vance, kidnaps Gloria and secrets her in a magnificent Manhattan penthouse. There, he slowly attempts to compel her to fall in love with him of her own volition, for only if she chooses to love him can Enervata gain the prize he desires. To defeat him, Bruce must go on a quest across America in search of the Four Pillars of Humanity, aided only by Jamie, his lifelong best friend (who happens to have been put on Earth to protect him) and the vague understanding that the angels who oppose Enervata will do their best to help him in his mission. Along the way, they pick up Charles, a rocker, Shannon, a stand-up comedian, Bedelia, a nice little Italian lady, Emily, an abandoned ten-year-old, and a fortuneteller named Ichabod Spark. The quest leads them to the Four Pillars. But now they need to confront Enervata. And Vance seems to be breaking down all of Gloria’s defenses.
Combining the sharp, clever vividness of Neil Gaiman’s #1 bestselling contemporary fantasies with the emotional intensity and character richness of Laurell Hamilton’s #1 bestselling supernatural romances, American Quest is the launch of a thrilling, broadly appealing new fiction franchise.
