Peter Miller, President of PMA Literary & Film Management, Inc., announces the sale of North American and Canadian Rights to A Twisted Ladder and a currently untitled second novel by Rhodi Hawk, to Eric Raab of Tor in a nice deal consummated at the BEA in New York. PMA manages Audio, Foreign, and Film Rights to this title.

As a practicing psychologist, Dr. Madeleine Savage has come to accept her father's cognitive schizophrenia, even though it's impacted every aspect of her professional and personal life. When revisiting the circumstances surrounding her brother's suicide, however, she uncovers secrets pertaining to her ancestry that alter her cool, clinical judgment forever.

Maddy discovers a world of sugar plantationers that lived at a time when the antebellum era was crumbling, and the line between servant and master was starting to fade. She also unearths a pattern of sinister, unexplainable occurrences that blur the line between science and superstition, insanity and clairvoyance, until Madeleine is forced to doubt her own mind, and her only allies are the visions—or hallucinations—that form a twisted ladder between the past and the present.

“Eerie and evocative, A Twisted Ladder provides scares and surprises galore.”

— Tess Gerritsen, Author of The Mephisto Club

“Rhodi Hawk has reshaped Southern Gothic and made it her own. Alternately lyrical and disturbing, majestic and profoundly creepy, A Twisted Ladder sings with an unabashed love of the South even while lifting its rocks to reveal the decay and darkness lurking beneath.”

— F. Paul Wilson

“Rhodi Hawk's riveting thriller A Twisted Ladder is a lean, mean page-turner that builds with the precision of a literary scalpel. Drenched in southern gothic atmosphere, Hawk's novel hums with the menace of a swamp crawling with gators. But there's so much more—a fascinating bayou history, a wrenching family drama, and even a cutting edge backdrop of brain science that rivals Michael Crichton. Highly recommended!”

— Jay Bonansinga

“Rhodi Hawk is a fantastic storyteller. Her novel A Twisted Ladder quickly hooks the reader with elements of rich southern imagery and dark suspense. Her characters are real and thoughtful, as is evident in Dr. Madeline Savage's personal journey deep into the potential of the human mind. With a rich storytelling prowess comparable to such writers as John Berendt and Greg Iles, A Twisted Ladder is sure to become a first novel not only worthy of publication, but of award recognition.”

— Michael Laimo, Author of Dead Souls

“A Twisted Ladder is eerily fascinating, suspenseful and psychologically compelling.”

— Pamela Wallace, Novelist and Academy Award Winning Screenwriter of WITNESS

“Rhodi Hawk's A Twisted Ladder is a novel of great power, a nasty Southern genre twister with a full dose of dark and light presented to us in fine controlled prose. It has all the great elements of Southern literature, but still manages to be hip and hot underneath those Southern shadows. I haven't been this impressed with a new writer in quite some time.”

— Joe R. Lansdale
